Interested in Becoming a Level 1 Referee?

We are always looking for dedicated individuals interested in becoming officials, although we only have the capacity to train a certain number of new officials in any given season.

Requirements (i.e. what we're looking for):

  • Submit an expression of interest to your local RIC and/or Regional Coordinator
  • 14 years of age or older
  • Strong skating skills
  • All officials in the Province of Ontario that are 18 years of age or over on or before December 31, must provide a valid police record check ro Ringette Ontario,

The Level 1: Introduction to Officiating clinic is designed to educate the new official in the basic techniques of officiating. The clinic material is covered in 4 components:

1. Mandatory online webinar on Ringette Canada website (ringette.ca). Must be completed before attending the in-class component.
2. 3 hour in-class component,
3. 50 minute on-ice component, (bring your skates, whistle and helmet without facemask).
4. Online completion of the knowledge exam (to be done at home following the clinic)

The topics covered include:

  • Qualification and pre-game duties
  • Positioning and on-ice mechanics
  • Violations and rules
  • Body contact principles
  • Signals
  • Skating skills assessment

The clinic is wrapped up with a Level 1 exam, with a 60% pass required to certify.

Ringette Canada crests, rulebook and casebook are provided at the in-class session. 

Required items after being certified: skates, black CSA certified helmet, whistle, black pants and an officials jersey.

A Level 1: Introduction to Officiating Clinic is held in in the Ottawa area on a weekend day in September/October of each year. Registration information for the clinic will be communicated to those who express interest through their RIC.
